Targeting redfish on the west central part of Florida can be an exciting and rewarding experience. The west central part of Florida offers a diverse range of habitats that are ideal for redfish. From expansive grass flats and mangrove-lined shorelines to oyster bars and tidal creeks, this region provides the perfect environment for these inshore gamefish.

Understanding the seasonal patterns is crucial when targeting redfish. In cooler months, look for them in deeper channels and warmer, sun-exposed flats. This time of year provides the best opportunity to sight fish.  As temperatures rise, they often move into either zones with more tidal flow or shade. These areas provide two things: food and relief from the heat.

When fly fishing for redfish, a 7 to 9-weight fly rod is recommended, depending on the size of the fish and the prevailing conditions. A sturdy, large arbor reel with a smooth drag system is essential for handling the powerful runs of redfish. Use a weight-forward floating line for ease of casting in shallow waters.

Redfish are opportunistic feeders, making them responsive to a variety of artificial lures and flies. For fly rod anglers, popular choices include crab and shrimp patterns, but baitfish imitations in earthy tones like brown, tan, and olive are effective choices. Time of year/water temperature often decides pattern choice due to the fluctuation of forage present.

One of the most thrilling aspects of targeting redfish in the shallows is sight fishing. Polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting their distinctive copper-colored bodies. Redfish can be finicky, and accurate casts are crucial. Practice your casting skills to deliver the fly or lure with precision can have a dramatic role in success.

Early mornings and late afternoons timed with a low tide are typically the best times to target redfish, as they are more active during these periods. Fishing during a rising tide can improve your chances of finding feeding redfish in shallower areas.

On our fishing charters, we practice catch-and-release to preserve the redfish population for future generations.
